In this intimate, participatory concert, Theresa Bear Fox opens with an a cappella protection song, inviting the audience to surround their families with light and calling on the four directions to watch over them. She honors women with a “woman’s power” song—celebrating good minds, strength, medicine, and teachings passed from grandmothers to mothers to children—before offering “Our Precious Mothers,” a heartfelt tribute to all mothers and to Mother Earth herself. With lyrics of apology and renewed commitment, she vows care for the land and for future generations.
Switching to drum and rattle, Fox introduces the water drum and leads songs that attune listeners to the Earth’s heartbeat and to the sacredness of water—reminding us that without water there is no life. She encourages communal rhythm (stomping feet like a heartbeat) and collective responsibility as caretakers of the Earth, embodying the Haudenosaunee “good mind.”
The set culminates with “Rich Girl,” an a cappella memoir of growing up the youngest of fourteen on a small farm—finding true wealth in family, hard work, stories, and love. Weaving prayerful vocals, teachings, and audience call-and-response, this concert is a living ceremony of gratitude, protection, and reverence for women, waters, and the natural world.
